Post title image showing the title "Clients Can Keep More Assets While Still Qualifying For Medi-Cal Benefits"During the past few weeks, I’ve received calls from attorneys and clients asking whether the Medi-Cal asset cap is still at $2,000. Thankfully, the cap has increased dramatically because of wording in California’s 2022 budget.

As of July l, 2022, California increased the cap to $130,000 with an additional $65,000 per family member living in the household. Assets in Medicare Set-Asides (MSAs) are not counted as income when determining traditional or expanded Medi-Cal eligibility.

Will Lindahl, National Executive Director of CPT Institute, and I wrote an article on these new laws that appeared in the June 2022 issue of CAALA’s Advocate. The article includes a chart of the new income limits based on household size and a discussion of how the new laws work.
